Help us repair bikes
as gifts for children this 2009 Holiday Season. CBSO is partnering with
community
agencies that need bikes for holiday presents for kids. Many of these
kids are currently homeless and living in shelters. In our
first year we are
targeting 10 refurbished
bikes and need your help to repair them and make them shine. We have
reserved two Sunday afternoons in December specifically for this
project.
Please
RSVP if you are able to attend either workshop session. click

| Notes
from the CBSO Board |
|
The
CBSO has had its most amazing year ever this past season.
New
volunteers, new energy and a building community of bike
enthusiasts. While we're maintaining our full hours over the
winter (for the first time ever), the slower winter months provide an
opportunity for the shop to regroup a bit and look to what we want to
accomplish in 2010. To that end, the Board will meet on
November
21 from 2-6 pm to revisit our bylaws and develop some strategic
planning for the next year. As an all-volunteer shop and
community, we welcome your ideas for how to move forward. If
you
have ideas for improvement, please share them with the board by email
at omahabike@gmail.com, or stop by our board planning retreat (let us
know you're coming by emailing omahabike@gmail.com).

Winter is
here, and it's the perfect time to tackle those bike tune-ups. Experienced
volunteers are on hand to help you through tasks that you might not have
attempted before. We need volunteers to help coordinate shop traffic,
assist with bike mechanics, and get involved in a variety of
special
projects we have going on. There's plenty to help with - so stop in.

Project
Homeless Kids Connect Omaha
12/24/2009 Noon-2PM Thursday |
Part
of the CBSO mission is building community. What better way to
exemplify this mission than for us to help with the annual Project
Homeless Kids Connect at the Civic Auditorium? We put a call
out
the generosity of the bicycle community to help us on Christmas Eve Day
as we pitch in to bring the joy of cycling to families that are
struggling.
CBSO will be donating functional, refurbished bicycles and new helmets
to this event. Plus, we will have a table for kids to make artwork from
discarded bike parts like spokes, cables, housings, ball bearing and
bolts. They can keep their art or give it to a loved one.
Consider making this brief event part of your family's tradition by
making time to come down to help us. Santa's elves are busy
that
day, we could really use your help!. If you plan to attend,
please let us know <click

|
The October
Volunteer night was highlighted with an amazing class on bottom bracket
maintenance, presented by Gary Gebhard. He shared his years of experience
as a professional bicycle mechanic and avid biker while offering techniques
to accurately diagnose and properly repair different bearing assemblies.
Thanks Gary!

| Creighton
University Bike Maintenance Workshop |
|
The
CBSO and Creighton University partnered up to present a bike
maintenance workshop at the university last Tuesday (Nov. 17). Held at
the beautiful Harper Center on Creighton University's campus, this is
the first time we've held an off-site workshop at a university. But it
certainly won't be the last. Stuart from the CBSO discussed bike
commuting, safety, gear, and introduced the shop and its mission to the
attendees. He followed up by going over the different types of bicycles
available and demonstrated how to adjust various bike components.
The
Creighton University public relations students provided food and drink
for participants.
If
your organization is interested in partnering with CBSO for a bicycle
advocacy or bike safety event, please contact us today.

Ladies Night
|
|
The
2009
"Ladies Nights" were a great success and will return March 2, 2010. In
the meantime, we're looking for ladies with the know-how and desire to
empower other women and girls to lead Ladies' Night workshops in 2010.
You don't have to be a bike mechanic to get involved. Think you have
what it takes? Email omahabike@gmail.com
|
| Earn-A-Bike
Program |
|
The popular
"Earn-A-Bike" program is available to anyone interested in volunteering
time working at the CBSO. After an individual completes 9 hours of
logged volunteer time, he/she may pick out a bike from the inventory.
Although the final reward is a new (used) bicycle, the real reward is
the committment and perseverance it takes to get there! While there
are no age restrictions on who may participate in the Earn-A-Bike
program, it must be done with parental/guardian approval. This program
is also a great team activity for other community agencies who provide
mentoring partnerships with youth. If you're not familiar with our
Earn-A-Bike program, get the details at our website, and stop by the
shop to pick up an application form.

We
Need You ! |
Become a Volunteer with the CBSO
|
| Send an
email to omahabike@gmail.com,
go to the website and fill out the volunteer application, or stop
and fill out one at the shop. Come to the monthly volunteer
night. If you don't want to work on bikes, there are a lot of
other opportunities for you to participate in the mission
of the shop. Take a minute now and look through the following
open volunteer positions -- pick one you could help with: |
| Needed:
Volunteer - Sale of Auction Bike leftovers |
We have a
few bicycles left over from the auction that we hope to sell. We are
looking for a volunteer to help advertise locally (like in CraigsList)
and then be at the shop to handle the sale. The
money from the sale will help to keep the shop doors open thru the
winter. The schedule will be established by the
volunteer.
The time commitment is expected to be an hour or two per
week.
If this is successful, we may continue this as a regular
feature. <click
here>
|
| Needed:
Volunteer for Bicycle Safety Education |
Classes
will designed around the
League of American Bicyclists curriculum and include on-road training.
If you are interested in serving as an instructor we'd love to
meet you! We're looking for an individual who is willing to offer
monthly, a 2 hour class on a repeating basis. <click
here>
|
| Needed:
Volunteer for Shop Supplies Coordination |
CBSO
uses a lot of tubes, patch kits, lubes, tools (they wear out
unfortunately), cables, cable housings, .... and more -- phew
!!
the list is lengthy. We are looking for an organized
individual
to help with maintaining an inventory, checking on supplies on a
periodic basis, ordering the right stuff online from our
wholesale
account, and then following up that it came in. The time
commitment would be one to two hours per month. <click
here>
|
| Needed:
Volunteer for Ebay & PayPal T-shirt sales |
To help
expand our T-shirt sales, CBSO is looking for a volunteer to manage the
sale of the CBSO T-shirt on Ebay and Paypal. This task would involve
posting the
ad, printing out a mailing label using the Ebay shipping tool, slipping
the shirt into an envelope and setting the package out for the postman.
We would expect the time commitment to be one to two hours
per month.<click

Headlamp
on a Volunteer |
|
Stopping
at the shop during most any open shop hour there's a good chance you
will run into Ananth Nagarajan.
Ananth has been a volunteer at the
shop for nearly two years. He is passionate about bicycles,
an excellent bike mechanic, active in board and volunteer meetings, and
makes an incredible pizza.
