Summer @ CBPO

Summer is busy time at the Community Bike Project! First, some new
things. We are now offering free weekly yoga classes at the shop,
Friday nights 6-7pm. No registration is necessary, but if you have a
chance to let us know you’re coming, it’s always appreciated. Classes
are taught by the wonderful Emma Neuberger from Bliss Yoga. We’ve had
one class already and everyone enjoyed it. Start your weekend off
right!

A few weeks ago, Destination Midtown led a group through the
neighborhood as part of their Neighborhood Business District Project
kick-off, and I was pleased to have the Community Bike Shop as their
first stop of the day. The hope is that this effort will lay out the
case for more sustainable economic development in the Gifford Park
area, and CBPO is happy to participate. Thanks for coming by.

Open Shop hours at the Shop have been busy busy busy. If you would
like to learn more about how to fix up your bike or would like to
volunteer your time to help us out, we’d be happy to see you. Our
hours are Wed/Thurs, 6-8pm and Sat, noon-4. We’ve got lots of people
using the shop these days, so if you come in for help, please be
patient, and if you’re coming in to volunteer, thank you!

We’ve been out in the community, too. So far this summer, we’ve helped
out at two City-run bike events for kids: one at the Kroc Center in
South O, where we helped organize a bike rodeo and helped refurbish
nearly 60 bikes that were then raffled off to neighborhood kids, and
then another at Miller Park in North O, where we tuned up a few dozen
bikes that were then raffled off. It’s so great to see so many happy
kids with their new bikes. We’ve also been managing Omaha’s new
B-cycle public bike share program. Next time you’re in the
UNO/Aksarben Village area, check out the blue bikes!

Finally, our bicycle maintenance classes are going strong and will
continue into the fall. For more information, please see our website
(www.communitybikeproject.org) or the Metro Community College website
(under Continuing Education classes). It another way we help break
down barriers to getting more people on bikes.

Ride Safe!

Livin’ Large at the Community Bike Shop

Update! The apartment has been rented. Thanks for all the interest in the apartment and in helping us out!

It’s like a dream come true…Cheap rent in a 1-bedroom apartment, 5 minutes from both Midtown Crossing and the Slowdown complex, near a bike path, and 24/7 access to bike tools, work stands, bike parts, and endless project bikes!

Here’s the skinny: The Community Bike Project is looking for a renter for the upstairs apartment at its Community Bike Shop at 525 North 33rd Street, just south of California Street and 2 doors down from Cali Taco. We would prefer to find an individual who wants to be involved with CBPO as a volunteer, but if you just want an apartment, that’s fine, too.

You get bonus points for helping us out: volunteer your time at the Shop and your rent could be as low as $200/month (gas, water, electric, internet included)! If you just want the apartment, rent is still only $500/month (gas, water, electric, internet still included). Secure, private parking lot behind the building, for those with a car.

Other nearby amenities:
- beautiful Gifford Park
- one of the best neighborhood gardens in the city just a few blocks away
- a great permaculture garden directly behind the Shop
- within walking distance of Creighton University
- the Marrakech restaurant – a tasty new Moroccan place across the street
- the Shelterbelt theater – indie theater just around the corner
- the California Bar – neighborhood staple for decades
- laundromat a block away
- Robinson’s Garage (car repair) next door
- and lots more

Interested? Call or email me–we are looking to rent the apartment immediately.

Thanks!

Welcome Summer!

Ok, I know summer doesn’t officially begin until June 21st, but with
the weather we’ve been having, it sure seems like it’s already here.
For the Community Bike Project, that means we’re hopping! With school
out and everyone itching to ride a bike, our Open Shop hours on
Wed/Thurs nights and Sat afternoons are busy. That means we can always
use a hand in the shop, mostly helping us keep the Shop from devolving
into chaos. If you have any bike mechanical skills, that’s just a
bonus. Please send an email to matt@communitybikeproject.org if you
want to help out, and I’ll get you scheduled for a shift.

In other news, our next round of bike classes are starting soon! We’re
offering two different sets of classes now: one focusing on safe
bicycling skills and the other focused on bike mechanics and repair.
We’ve teamed up with Metro Community College to teach these classes,
so you can now get official certificates for completing the whole
class curriculum for each. To sign up for the classes, go to MCC’s
website and look under “Continuing Ed” and then “Sports & Games.” The
cost is $19/class with discounts if you sign up for the whole course
all at once. The tuition allows us to pay our instructors something
for their time, as well as to help support CBPO. All classes will be
taught at the Community Bike Shop in Gifford Park.

Let us know how we’re doing! Stop by to chat or email me at

Happy June,

New Art Going Up In Shop!

Next time you stop in the Shop, be sure to check out the great new artwork that’s taking shape on the walls! Three high schools students from the Kent Bellows Studio, mentored by local artist Bill Hoover, are adding to the atmosphere of the Shop with their paintings. Thanks much to the Kent Bellows Studio for sharing their gifted artists with us and to the Nebraska Arts Council for providing a grant to KBS to make this possible!
